Military Culture in Imperial China

Description

This volume explores the relationship between culture and the military in Chinese society from early China to the Qing empire, with contributions by eminent scholars aiming to reexamine the relationship between military matters and law, government, historiography, art, philosophy, literature, and politics. This book critically investigates the perception that, due to the influence of Confucianism, Chinese culture has systematically devalued military matters. There was nothing inherently pacifist about the Chinese governments' views of war, and pragmatic approaches - even aggressive and expansionist projects - often prevailed. Though it has changed in form, a military elite has existed in China from the beginning of its history, and military service included a large proportion of the population at any given time. Popular literature praised the martial ethos of fighting men. Civil officials attended constantly to military matters on the administrative and financial ends. The seven military classics produced in antiquity continued to be read even into the modern period. These original essays explore the ways in which intellectual, civilian, and literary elements helped shape the nature of military institutions, theory, and the culture of war. This important contribution bridges two literatures, military and cultural, that seldom appear together in the study of China, and deepens our understanding of war and society in Chinese history.

BMW's motorcycle division is no less legendary. It began with the 1923 avant-garde R32, which featured a 180-degree, horizontally opposed twin, the engine configuration that would become BMW's hallmark. Along the way, BMW would use that configuration to power groundbreaking machines like the R90S, R100RS, and R80GS. Beginning in 1983, they would add three- and four-cylinder machines to their offerings, culminating in today's spectacular S1000RR sport bike. As the deadline for the "Capella" s reappearance draws near, Alex fears that the puzzle of the artifacts will be lost yet again • Military Culture in Imperial China free pdf Short, themed chapters can be read in any order at any time This volume also features an overview of rap poetics and the forces that shaped each period in rap's historical development, as well as a foreword by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and an afterword by Common. Enter the anthology to experience the full range of rap's artistry and discover a rich poetic tradition hiding in plain sight.

Enterprise Content Management Best Practices : Ecm Strategy 100 Most Asked Questions - Solve Your Information Management Challenges on Email Management

Description

Enterprise content management (ECM) is a set of technologies used to capture, store, preserve and deliver content and documents and content related to organizational processes. ECM tools and strategies allow the management of an organization's unstructured information, wherever that information exists. This book covers all the basics on ECM, a new term that is intended to completely encompass the legacy problem domains that have traditionally been addressed by records management and document management. It also includes all of the additional problems involved in converting to and from digital content, to and from the traditional media of those problem domains (such as physical and computerized filing and retrieval systems, often involving paper and microforms). Finally ECM is a new problem domain in its own right, as it has employed the technologies and strategies of (digital) content management to address business process issues, such as records and auditing, knowledge sharing, personalization and standardization of content, and so on. This is an excellent book on ECM. It's easy to read, the content is solid, useful and instantly applicable.

A Dance of Ghosts pdf

David Dalglish: A Dance of Ghosts

A Dance of Ghosts

Description

IN A CITY KNOWN FOR DARKNESS, THE UNDERWORLD TREMBLES AT THE RISE OF THE SUN...A night of fire and blood heralds Muzien the Darkhand's arrival to the beleaguered city of Veldaren. With him comes the might of the Sun Guild, eager to spread their criminal empire to the east. Left blind and vulnerable after being attacked by the Widow, Alyssa Gemcroft struggles to hold together the remnants of the Trifect as the Sun Guild's arrival threatens to shatter whatever future her son might have left. Veldaren's only hope is in the Watcher, but Haern is no longer there. With his father, Thren Felhorn, he is traveling to the Stronghold, an ancient bastion of the dark paladins of Karak. Will they find the answers they seek? Or will the Stronghold be their final destination? Killer or savior; the line can no longer remain blurred. Fantasy author David Dalglish continues his tale of retribution and darkness, and an underworld reaching for ultimate power in this never-before-released novel in the Shadowdance series following A Dance of Mirrors.

In this work, Watkins tells her own dramatic story of miraculous healing and conversion to Catholicism, along with the stories of five others, including a homeless drug addict, a stripper, and a modern-day hero. From the smoke-filled coffeehouse of the 1950s folk scene, where she first performed, to the racially tense South of the early sixties, bringing support to terrorized African-Americans with Martin Luther King, Jr. Joan has been involved with some of the most important political movements including the 2008 Presidential elections. Joan always took her social and political beliefs on-stage with her. The Woodstock performance where she sang to thousands in the middle of the night while six months pregnant became one of the stand-out and iconic performances of that period. In France, Italy, and Spain, her concerts made headlines for the political confrontations they sparked and in a church in Poland she sang to the brave workers of Solidarity. Whether she is recounting her Crowned and Moldering download ebook pdf stormy love affair with a young, undiscovered, and very ambitious Bob Dylan and how, years later, they fought bitterly over her affair with a woman. Or her marriage to David Harris and the pain of their break up, Joan displays both the openness and vulnerability that have touched us in her music and the passion and integrity that have marked her politics.

Saint-Germain-Des-Pres: Paris's Rebel Quarter

Description

The award-winning chronicler of life in Paris reveals the secrets of his home quarter, Saint-Germain-des-Pres A unique blend of history, memoir, and sightseeing essentials, Saint-Germain-des-Pres is a captivating "narrative guidebook" to one of Paris's iconic quarters by John Baxter, bestselling author of The Most Beautiful Walk in the World. Occupying less than a square mile along Paris's Left Bank, Saint-Germain-des-Pres, originally an independent village centered around the medieval abbey that lends the quarter its name, has for centuries been home to rebels of all stripes. Within its boundaries, the French Revolution was plotted, the guillotine invented, and in 1968 students revolted and clashed with police. Philosopher Descartes is buried here (sans skull), while Sartre, Camus, and de Beauvoir birthed existentialism around the tables of the legendary Cafe de Flore. Saint-Germain sheltered and inspired such artistic rebels as Picasso, Rimbaud, Hemingway, and scores of jazz musicians. Today, the neighborhood, with its cobblestone streets, iconic cafes, and unique shopping destinations, is one of Paris's premier tourist attractions. And yet it retains its rebel soul-if you know where to look. In this first book in his "Great Parisian Neighborhoods" series, Baxter, an expat who has called Saint-Germain home for more than two decades, guides readers on an off-the-beaten-path journey through the quarter's history, landmarks, and delights.

Giorgio Agamben,Kevin McLaughlin,Amanda Minervini: Nymphs

Nymphs

Description

In 1900, Dutch art historians Andre Jolles and Aby Warburg constructed an experimental dialogue in which Jolles supposed he had fallen in love with the figure of a young woman in a painting: "A fantastic figure - shall I call her a servant girl, or rather a classical nymph? What is the meaning of it all - Who is the nymph? Where does she come from?" Warburg's response: "In essence she is an elemental spirit, a pagan goddess in exile," serves as the touchstone for this wide-ranging and theoretical exploration of female representation in iconography. In "Nymphs", the newest translation of Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben's work, the author notes that academic research has lingered on the "pagan goddess," while the concept of "elemental spirit," ignored by scholars, is vital to the history of iconography. Tracing the genealogy of this idea, Agamben goes on to examine subjects as diverse as the aesthetic theories of choreographer Domineco da Piacenza, Friedrich Theodor Vischer's essay on the "symbol," Walter Benjamin's concept of the dialectic image, and the bizarre discoveries of photographer Nathan Lerner in 1972. From these investigations emerges a startlingly original exploration of the ideas of time and the image. Agamben is the rare writer whose ideas and works have a broad appeal across many fields, and "Nymphs" will engage not only the author's devoted fans in philosophy, legal theory, sociology, and literary criticism, but his growing audience among art theorists and historians as well.

Simon Goddard: Ziggyology

Ziggyology

Description

He came from Outer Space...It was the greatest invention in the history of pop music - the rock god who came from the stars - which struck a young David Bowie like a lightning bolt from the heavens. When Ziggy the glam alien messiah fell to Earth, he transformed Bowie from a prodigy to a superstar who changed the face of music forever. But who was Ziggy Stardust? And where did he really come from? In a work of supreme pop archaeology, Simon Goddard unearths every influence that brought Ziggy to life - from HG Wells to Holst, Kabuki to Kubrick, and Elvis to Iggy. Ziggyology documents the epic drama of the Starman's short but eventful time on Planet Earth ...and why Bowie eventually had to kill him.

The Joke and Its Relation to the Unconscious

Description

Why do we laugh? The answer, argued Freud in this groundbreaking study of humor, is that jokes, like dreams, satisfy our unconscious desires. "The Joke and Its Relation to the Unconscious"explains how jokes provide immense pleasure by releasing us from our inhibitions and allowing us to express sexual, aggressive, playful, or cynical instincts that would otherwise remain hidden. In elaborating this theory, Freud brings together a rich collection of puns, witticisms, one-liners, and anecdotes, which, as Freud shows, are a method of giving ourselves away. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. Sylvia Plath: The Bell Jar

The Bell Jar

Description

A vulnerable young girl wins a dream assignment on a big-time New York fashion magazine and finds herself plunged into a nightmare. An autobiographical account of Sylvia Plath's own mental breakdown and suicide attempt, "The Bell Jar" is more than a confessional novel, it is a comic but painful statement of what happens to a woman's aspirations in a society that refuses to take them seriously... a society that expects electroshock to cure the despair of a sensitive, questioning young artist whose search for identity becomes a terrifying descent toward madness. "A fine novel, as bitter and remorseless as her last poems -- the kind of book Salinger's Fanny might have written about herself ten years later, if she had spent those ten years in Hell." -- Robert Scholes, "The New York Times Book Review." "By turns funny, harrowing, crude, ardent and artless. Its most notable quality is an astonishing immediacy, like a series of snapshots taken at high noon." -- "Time." "A special poignance... a special force, a humbling power, because it shows the vulnerability of people of hope and good will." -- "Newsweek."

The football star made famous in the hit film (and book) "The Blind Side" reflects on how far he has come from the circumstances of his youth. Michael Oher shares his personal account of his story, in this inspirational "New York Times" bestseller.Looking back on how he went from being a homeless child in Memphis to playing in the NFL, Michael talks about the goals he had to break out of the cycle of poverty, addiction, and hopelessness that trapped his family. Eventually he grasped onto football as his ticket out and worked hard to make his dream into a reality. With his adoptive family, the Touhys, and other influential people in mind, he describes the absolute necessity of seeking out positive role models and good friends who share the same values to achieve one's dreams. Sharing untold stories of heartache, determination, courage, and By a Woman's Hand free download pdf love, "I Beat the Odds" is an incredibly rousing tale of one young man's quest to achieve the American dream.

By a Woman's Hand

Description

At the turn of the twentieth century, the demand for magazine and book illustrations was at an all-time high, offering women artists an unprecedented number of professional opportunities. This unique anthology features120 color and black-and-white artworks by the Golden Age of Illustration'sfinest female illustrators, including Beatrix Potter, Kate Greenaway, and Jessie Willcox Smith. A career in illustration represented an ideal opportunity for women in post-Victorian society. Every well-bred girl was schooled in the arts of sketching and drawing, and by working at home, a woman's modesty could remain uncompromised. Successful competition in a world dominated by male artists, however, called for determination as well as talent. This compilation celebrates the accomplishments oftwenty-two female illustrators, including Elenore Abbott, Mabel Lucie Attwell, Elizabeth Shippen Green, Ruth Mary Hallock, Jessie Marion King, Dorothy Lathrop, Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, Margaret Winifred Tarrant, and others."
